When Josie Jensen, an awkward 13-year-old musical prodigy crashes headlong into new-comer Samuel Yazzie, an 18-year-old Navajo boy full of anger and confusion, an unlikely friendship blooms. Josie teaches Samuel about words, music and friendship, and along the way finds a kindred spirit. Upon graduation, Samuel abandons the sleepy, small town in search of a future and a life, leaving his young friend behind. Many years go by and Samuel returns, finding Josie in need of the very things she offered him years before. Their roles reversed, Samuel teaches Josie about life, love, and letting go. Deeply romantic and poignant, Running Barefoot is the story of a small town girl and a Native American boy, the ties that bind them to their homes and families, and the love that gives them wings.

Will include this bk as among one of the better ones I've read so far this year. Sweet, endearing story about Josie a lonely young girl with above average intelligence and musical talent growing up in small town Levan and Samuel, an equally lonely boy of mixed heritage (Navajo/Caucasian), with a chip on his shoulder who captures Josie's heart and soul. Although the ages of the H/h start out young 18/13 yrs, by the end of the story Josie and Samuel are 28/23 yrs. I wouldn't consider this a YA story although it's suited for all ages, more sweet romantic fiction. The bond between Samuel and Josie starts off as an unusual friendship given their age difference and cultures but its Josie as the mentor who helps Samuel learn about books and music but its kindness, hope and love that are the underlying lessons. While there is such depth to their friendship, Samuel is aware of their age difference and keeps his emotional distance appropriate at all times.. Upon graduation Samuel is off to join the military and leaves Josie heartbroken at the loss of their deep friendship and a love left unexpressed. Upon Samuel's return to Levan 10 years later, this time it's Josie who needs Samuel as the mentor to help her heal from loss and learn about hope, love and letting go. Warning - there's a few Kleenex moments here with a wonderful HEA.

Running Barefoot eBook Amy Harmon Reviews

Running Barefoot is a love story that spans through ten years worth of time and takes the reader through a journey that will leave them appreciating love's splendor.

Josie is a 13 year old girl, who finds herself sitting on the school bus next to Samuel, an 18 year old Navajo boy. A friendship grows between these two lonely souls who don't quite fit in with their peers. Books and music fill their conversations.

Samuel's graduation has him leaving their small town. He wants to become a man of worth. The separation, of these two, brings many changes that will grow them into the adult they aspire to. After many years with no contact they are brought back together and find themselves trying to rekindle their bond. Having both endured hardship and loss one thing remains... their will to persevere through it all.

When I heard that Josie and Samuel will be making a cameo in "The Law of Moses" I knew I wanted to read this in preparation for TLOM. I bought the audio of Running Barefoot so I could listen to it while I worked. It's a beautifully written debut novel. The flow and beauty of the story left me in awe of Ms. Harmon's storytelling skills. Thank you, Ms. Harmon, for another inspiring love story that leaves me feeling encouraged and blessed.

A side note from Amy Harmon
My very first published novel was Running Barefoot. It takes place in the town where I grew up, and it is filled with the nostalgia and flavor of home. In my new book, The Law of Moses, I return to that little town where it all began. The Law of Moses is a completely different story with all new characters, but I invited my main characters from Running Barefoot, Samuel and Josie, to duck their heads into a scene or two and say hello for old times sake. To celebrate The Law of Moses and to give a nod to my first book, I am putting Running Barefoot on sale for a few days so that you can snatch it up to read before (or after) you read about Moses. Again, these books are not in any way a series or even a spin-off. But you will squeal a little when you see Samuel and Josie in The Law of Moses.

Standalone
I almost deleted this book from the get go because it started with details more like a documentary, which I just couldn't really get into and I wasn't sure where it was going, if anywhere. Fortunately, I kept going and it finally launched off that this was going to be about a girl's life beginning with the tragedy of losing her mother at a young age.

So this ended up being a very sweet developing romance story from a small town area in Utah, though it didn't take place that long ago (can't remember, but I think it started in the 1990's. f feel this is basically a well written book, though it could use some editing regarding spelling etc. which I can overlook. I like that the places and some of the other historical content are real as stated in the appendix.. For me the two main characters were well developed and it was easy for me to relate to Josie, whose life experiences are the heart of the book (from around age 13 through her twenties).

The characters in this story hold to Christian morals and there are some references to scripture alluded to along the way, I did not detect any Christian message of the gospel of God's grace here and I don't recall if this was touted as a Christian novel or not. I sensed a lot of good Mormon influence and values that I expect to be the belief system of the author. For me, this was all very good from the family and moral aspect, but if you hope for some strong Christian message of the gospel, it isn't here. That's fine, because most are not going to be reading it for that

Without going into the details of the story, I guess the reason I don't give it five stars is that I got a little slogged down with certain details which were o.k. but made it drag a little bit for me in places. I thought it a bit predictable that Josie and Samuel were going to eventually reveal that they had fallen in love with one another and probably get married, the story still held my interest and I did enjoy it.
I am an Amy Harmon fan. I love the way she tells a story with a focus on characters in challenging situations. It is impossible not to love Josie Jensen. Josie is a young girl and responsible for running the house for her father and brothers. I love how she proactively learns how to cook and clean from friends and neighbors. She is strong, loving, and a gifted pianist. Her romance with Samuel Yazzie begins as what many people would say as puppy love or a young infatuation with a high school senior. Sam knows they can only have a friendship and moves on his desire to be a Marine. Many years later they meet up again. Both characters survive many curve balls that life throws at them.

A lovely, emotional story that made me cry but also made me smile. Excellent.
