Freeman Woodson, editor and chief of 'the Shield', the Black student newspaper of Hunter College, fears that Mayor David N. Dinkins, New York City's first Black Mayor, may be blowing his bid for re-election, and that black folk may be stuck with Rudolph Giuliani as Mayor.
Unable to sit idly by, Freeman helps form 'CUNY-for Dinkins', a coalition of Black and Latino student organizations supporting the Dinkins' re-election bid.
Soon his involvement in the campaign and his budding relationship with the beautiful Dominican student, Angelita, combine with a radical turn of events in her family to embroil Freeman in the depths of police corruption and a plot to assassinate the Mayor. With his back against the wall, Freeman finds himself forced to seek the assistance of a family member previously rejected as a sell-out.
Racial identity, the American melting pot, Black-Latino relations, New York City ethnic and racial politics and police corruption all converge in this humorous and suspense packed journey.

Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens edition by David Lamb Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book and the play was not what I expected. It is basically about two different cultures and African Americans trying to point out that we are like them because we have African roots. I agree that we do share African roots but the similarities stop there. African American culture is not as influenced from Africa as the Hispanic culture is. You can hear the drums and rhythm in our music and taste the herbs & spices in our food. Yes, we both hail from African roots the same way Middle Easterns, Brazilians, Scilians, Asians, etc. do however our cultures are different. Either way, why drone on about "blackness" when we should embrace all cultures and just get along instead of feeling you have to prove who is of African ancenstory or not. In the end, we are all of the human race. And that's ONE race and that alone is a beautiful thing.
I could not believe the format and content of this book when I requested it from NU's library. How did it get published? There are so many typos and it was badly written; it's an insult to refer to this material as a book, let alone allow it to represent Black/Latino life. Please attend workshops in creative writing, take courses at your local university, read other literature, something, but don't publish anymore!
This book is a great book that deals with Latino and Black relations. It addresses many issues that these two groups face in their communities and in our society. David Lamb accomplishes this with a lyrical prose familiar to today's urban youth. By embracing this emerging group of individuals. Lamb raises many issues such as race relations and the notion of "blackness." I had the opportunity to meet the author and he is an amazing man. He made me think about issues in our society on a deeper level and from a different angle.
I really enjoyed this book. Even though the book is about Dominicans and African Americans, It truly speaks about how the Latin American community is really hateful of being dark skinned. A good perspective on the thin blue line and the brotherhood that sometimes sees more than blue. Good quick read. I really liked it.
You must see Platanos and Collard Greens! Make sure to bring your appetite for humor and good fun!
I was sitting there waiting for this much talked about Off-Broadway show. I was sitting pretty, not making too much noise, sitting up straight - you know - it's an Off-Broadway show, right?
The lights dim and the show begins with hip hop music - Big Pun to be exact. The people on the stage are college students walking around their campus just having a good time. The guys are checking out the girls and vice versa. Then someone runs onto the middle of the stage and shouts out, "When I say `plata', you say `nos'! Plata-nos! Plata-nos!' The audience followed. But this young man center stage was not feeling it! He said real loud, "This show is about audience participation! So when I say `Plata', you say `NOS!!!'" Now the audience understands, including me. I got more comfortable in my seat and bopping to the beat said "PLATA-NOS!!! PLATA-NOS!!!"
The Off-Broadway show begins - with flavor! With our style! When it was funny we weren't afraid to laugh out loud! When it was time to respond with an "a-hum!" the audience made sure to agree out loud! When they played a song everyone loved the audience sang right along.
Do Platanos Go With Collard Greens? is simply
just great fun. The question is explored culturally
and historically with love between both cultures
and quick history of the Latino culture and the
Black culture and the unity between the two as far
as growing up together in the same
neighborhoods, in the same circles.
With out spoiling the story, the twist is that the
African-American college student that is slowly
falling more and more in love with the light-
skinned Dominicana is a righteous Black male
who is more concerned with how it looks for him
to be with her than how he feels about her. La
Dominicana is more concerned with her mother
who doesn't want her daughter going out with un
moreno because uno tiene que mejorar la
raza. The daughter argues with her mother that
her boyfriend is even lighter than her mother and
her mother responds sternly and under no
uncertain terms that she is NOT Black. And so
the story unfolds. A novela set onstage.
Platanos and Collard Greens is sweet, true fun!
Bring your appetite for laughter when you go to
see this novela set on stage! Or better yet bring
ese moreno guapo you've had your eye on for
some time now! )
